Number of Americans in poverty hits record high

President Obama last week launched a new jobs plan to try to increase employment opportunities

US Economy

* How did the US debt get so bad?
* US: From boom to bust explained Watch
* Could US stagnate like Japan?
* Obama unveils $450bn jobs package

The number of Americans living in poverty rose to a record 46.2 million last year, official data has shown.

This is the highest figure since the US Census Bureau started collecting the data in 1959.

In percentage terms, the poverty rate rose to 15.1%, up from 14.3% in 2009.

The US definition of poverty is an annual income of $22,314 (£14,129) or less for a family of four and $11,139 for a single person.

The number of Americans living below the poverty line has now risen for four years in a row, while the poverty rate is the biggest since 1993.

Poverty among black and Hispanic people was much higher than for the overall US population last year, the figures also showed.

The Census Bureau data said 25.8% of black people were living in poverty and 25.3% of Hispanic people.

Its latest report also showed that the average annual US household income fell 2.3% in 2010 to $49,445.

Meanwhile, the number of Americans without health insurance remained about 50 million.

The data comes as the US unemployment rate remains above 9%.

President Barack Obama last week launched a new $450bn job creation plan.

He wants to fund huge construction projects, schools and services, while giving tax cuts to workers and small businesses to boost recruitment.

However, his plans require backing from Congress, where Republicans - who control the House of Representatives - have voiced their opposition.

US-Guatemala relations

"Guatemala's beauty and strength of identity have not been accompanied by cohesion and prosperity. In 1996 it emerged from a 36-year-long civil war which pitted leftist, mostly Mayan insurgents against the army, which - backed by the US - waged a vicious campaign to eliminate the guerrillas.

More than 200,000 people - most of them civilians - were killed or disappeared.

Despite an official finding that 93% of all atrocities carried out during the war had been committed by the security forces, moves to bring those responsible to account started only after a long delay.

Social inequality is a major feature of Guatemala. Poverty is particularly widespread in the countryside and among indigenous communities.

Illiteracy, infant mortality and malnutrition are among the highest in the region, life expectancy is among the lowest and, in common with many of its neighbours, the country is plagued by organised crime and violent street gangs. It is a major corridor for smuggling drugs from South America to the United States.

Despite talks and international mediation, a long-running territorial dispute with neigbouring Belize remains unresolved. Guatemala lays claim to thousands of square kilometres of land."

Guatemala STD tests 'may have infected 2,500'

Treponema pallidum, the bacteria that causes syphilis in man Hundreds of people were infected with syphilis bacteria during the experiments

Related Stories

The extent of US medical experiments in Guatemala on STDs during the 1940s is greater than previously thought, health authorities have told the BBC.

The number of infected people could be as high as 2,500, says the president of the Medical Association of Guatemala.

According to a US report released on Monday, 1,300 Guatemalans were infected without their knowledge to study the effects of penicillin.

US scientists knew they were violating ethical rules, the report found.

There is also enough evidence to conclude there was collaboration between US and Guatemalan authorities at the time of the tests, Carlos Mejia, a member of the commission established by the Guatemalan government to investigate the experiments, told BBC Mundo.

At least nine Guatemalan doctors were involved in these experiments, he said.

Eight of them have already died, but authorities still do not know the whereabouts of a ninth, who would now be over 90 years old, he added.

The commission's final report is due in October.

End Quote Carlos Mejia President of the Medical Association of Guatemala

Many of the same US government scientists who carried out the Guatemalan tests had sought consent from participants in an earlier study in the US.

'Nazi-like'

The US Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues had said some 5,500 Guatemalans were involved in all the research that took place between 1946 and 1948, with a view to applying the results on US troops stationed around the world.

Of these, some 1,300 prisoners, psychiatric patients and sex workers were deliberately infected with syphilis, gonorrhoea or another sexually transmitted disease, chancroid.

Concentrations of bacteria were injected into the eyes, the central nervous system and male genitals. Mr Mejia says this was behaviour very similar to that of the scientists in Nazi Germany.

"It took place in the context in which they [the United States] were judging the German doctors who had been experimenting with typhus and malaria on prisoners of war. The Nazis used Poles, Russians and Jews, while the Americans made almost the same use of Guatemalans," he says.

Of the group of 1,300, only about 700 received some sort of treatment.

According to documents the commission had studied, at least 83 of the 5,500 subjects had died by the end of 1953.

The commission was unable to say whether any of those deaths were caused directly or indirectly by the deliberate infections.

US President Barack Obama set up the commission when academic research carried out on the experiments by US government scientists first came to light last year.

He also apologised to his Guatemalan counterpart, Alvaro Colom, saying the acts ran contrary to American values.

Earlier this year, a group of Guatemalans who were involved in the study announced they were suing the US government over the affair.

breakthis: Some presidents were just better than others.
Health Benefits: 1. Cancer There is a lot of unfounded rhetoric that states smoking pot can cause lung cancer because your inhaling smoke, like cigarettes. This simply isn’t true. Cigarette smoke causes cancer because the tobacco is radiated whereas marijuana isn’t. In fact, the American Association for Cancer Research has found the marijuana actually works to slow down tumor growth in the lungs, breasts, and brain considerably. 2. Seizures Marijuana is a muscle relaxant and has “antispasmodic” qualities which have proven to be a very effective treatment of seizures. There are actually countless cases of people suffering from seizures that have only been able to function better through the use of marijuana. 3. Migraines Since medicinal marijuana was legalized in California, doctors have reported that they have been able to treat more than 300,000 cases of migraines that conventional medicine couldn’t through marijuana. And that’s NOT just because it’s easy to fake having migraines, right? RIGHT?! 4. Glaucoma Marijuana’s treatment of glaucoma has been one of the best documented. There isn’t a single valid study that exists that disproves marijuana’s very powerful and popular effects on glaucoma patients. Beat that, DEA! 5. Multiple Sclerosis Marijuana’s effects on multiple sclerosis patients became better documented when former talk-show host, Montel Williams began to use pot to treat his MS. Marijuana works to stop the neurological effects and muscle spasms that come from the fatal disease. 6. Tourette’s and OCD Just like marijuana can treat seizures and multiple sclerosis, marijuana’s effects slow down the tics in those suffering from Tourette’s, and the obsessive neurological symptoms in people with OCD. 7. ADD and ADHD A well documented USC study done about a year ago showed that marijuana is not only a perfect alternative for Ritalin but treats the disorder without any of the negative side effects of the pharmaceutical. 8. IBS and Crohn’s Marijuana has shown that it can help with symptoms of the chronic diseases as it stops nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. 9. Alzheimer’s Despite what you may have heard about marijuana’s effects on the brain, the Scripps Institute, in 2006, proved that the THC found in marijuana works to prevent Alzheimer’s by blocking the deposits in the brain that cause the disease. 10. Premenstrual Syndrome Next time your girlfriend is complaining that you smoke too much weed, hand her a joint. Just like marijuana is used to treat IBS, it can be used to treat the cramps and discomfort that causes your girlfriend to lash out at you. Using marijuana for PMS actually goes all the way back to Queen Victoria. Health Benefits:

mother nature

it amazes me how large and powerful mother nature can be. if you were standing at that resort shown in the video, you'd think it was tall and huge and a great achievement, but look at the mammoth size of that fucking storm.

"A towering wall of dust , more commonly called a "haboob", rolled up from the south Tuesday night and arrived in metro-Phoenix just after 7pm. This wall of dust originated from collapsing thunderstorms north of Tucson late in the day. Cold, dense air at the top of these massive thunderstorms drop straight down at then end of the cloud cycle and hits the ground, forcing the desert dust and sand airborne as it rolls out from under the cloud. Visibility dropped to less than 50ft in the city, causing flight delays and traffic problems. Winds inside the cloud were near 70mph and caused minor damage. These are storms are common during the Arizona Monsoon, but this one of the largest in recent memory. This is a time-lapse video taken from a news helicopter."

"Giant Dust storm in Arizona comes accross the valley, 7000 feet high and 51 miles wide. We ask is this the making of geoengineering? More information is contained in this video!
UPDATE! More details: , in my area, the winds picked up FIRST, 60 mile an hour winds. People brought there kids in and there animals right away. Then the wind and the trees were blowing and whipping around, hard to capture in a still shot I suppose. As to the actual PLUME , it built up right before my eyes, raging in from the South East, covering the mountain (literally eclipsing the mountain and the sky. It was so loud outside, because the wind and trees were whipping around...then this gigantic plume erupted and just sort of rolled in...it was not peaceful what so ever...the dirt was typical of the desert, reddish sand and dirt, and it dumped into my pool (also typical of a dust storm. But this was like no one had ever seen in the desert, and the news is still reporting on it daily. The wind blew from several directions, like a funnel effect, as I watched my trees, they bounced around in all directions and some of the 6 foot fan palms were forced by winds and bent to the ground. UPDATE JULY &, 2011 :Trees were uprooted around Casa Grande when I did the drive by yesterday. Huge trees (again typical of winds, nothing new there) It was the enormous PLUME that just blew your mind as it grew and got higher and thicker with dirt, it ROLLED in like a wave of water. The after effects were 20 ft. visibility , and we still have not settled all of the dust. Yesterday it was like a global dimming here in Casa Grande, the air, a thick greyish brown haze, the streets covered with mounds of dirt and desert sand piled up on the side of the roads, as well as the center of the roads, and when I drove on the pavement, it was like I was driving off road,as the dirt kicked up around the tires and into the air."

White Wagtail, national bird of Latvia, repping since 1960.

"Latvia's national bird is the White Wagtail (Motacilla alba), Latvian: baltā cielava. This slender and graceful bird is found in Latvia from April till October. The White Wagtail can usually be seen running briskly along the ground, wagging its tail up and down. This bird typically nests in the rafters and eaves of buildings, woodpiles, stone piles, and birdhouses. During the winter it migrates to Southern Europe and North Africa. The White Wagtail was affirmed the national bird of Latvia in 1960 by the International Bird Protection Council."

Tarantula Hawk Wasp

Male Tarantula Hawk Wasp
Female dragging its prey back to the below location

The female tarantula hawk captures, stings, and paralyzes the spider, then either drags her prey back into her own
burrow or transports it to a specially prepared nest, where a single egg is laid on the spider’s body, and the
entrance is covered. When the wasp larva hatches, it rips a small hole in the spider's abdomen, then plunges into
the spider's belly and feeds voraciously, avoiding vital organs for as long as possible to keep it fresh. After
several weeks, the larva pupates. Finally, the wasp becomes an adult, and tears open the spider's belly to get out.
The wasp emerges from the nest to continue the life cycle. Tarantula wasps are also nectarivorous. The consumption
of fermented fruit sometimes intoxicates them to the point that flight becomes difficult. While the wasps tend to be
most active in daytime summer months, they tend to avoid the very highest temperatures. The male tarantula hawk does
not hunt; instead, it feeds off the flowers of milkweeds, western soapberry trees, or mesquite trees (females feed
on these same plants, as well).[1] The male tarantula hawk has a behavior called hill-topping, where he sits atop
tall plants and watches for passing females that are ready to reproduce, aka fuck their brains out.
The tarantula hawk is relatively docile and rarely stings without provocation. However the sting, particularly of
Pepsis formosa, is among the most painful of any insect, though the intense pain only lasts for about 3 minutes.[3]
Commenting on his own experience, one researcher described the pain as "…immediate, excruciating pain that simply
shuts down one's ability to do anything, except, perhaps, scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these
situations."[2] In terms of scale, the wasp's sting is rated near the top of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, second
only to that of the bullet ant and is described by Schmidt as "blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric".[4]
Because of their extremely large stingers, very few animals are able to eat them; one of the few animals that can is
the roadrunner. As many predatory animals avoid these wasps, there are many different insects which are mimics,
including various other wasps and bees (Mullerian mimics), as well as moths, flies (e.g., mydas flies), and beetles
(e.g., Tragidion) (Batesian mimics).

The only animal that even fucks with these things is the infamous roadrunner as pictured below.

and that is a fact.

Sidenote, The Honeywell RQ-16 T-Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle has been named after the Tarantula Hawk.
